Automotive Turbocharger Market- Market Research,Global Trends & Forecasts to 2017

This blog defines and segments the global automotive turbocharger market by vehicle type, fuel type, and geography with analysis and forecast of the global volume and revenue.

A turbocharger, or turbo is a turbine driven forced induction device that makes an engine more efficient and produce more power for its size by forcing extra air into the combustion chamber. A turbocharged engine is more powerful and efficient than a naturally aspirated engine because the turbine forces more air, and proportionately more fuel, into the combustion chamber than atmospheric pressure alone.

Automotive turbochargers are forced induction systems which compress air entering into the engine by utilizing the heat energy of exhaust gases. These turbocharger devices introduce greater volumes of air into the engine cylinder thus making available more air-fuel mixture in each cylinder during power stroke of an engine; which in-turn boosts its performance. A turbocharged engine offers many advantages such as increased power output, improved power to weight ratio and vehicle efficiency, and also helps in engine downsizing.
The turbochargers use three basic technologies namely VGT, wastegate, and twin turbo.

Automotive turbocharger market is further classified by vehicle type, fuel type, and geography.

Automotive turbocharger market by vehicle type :

The turbocharged automotive are divided as gasoline and diesel turbocharged;
  1. Passenger cars : Variable Geometry Turbochargers technology is widely adopted in passenger cars
  2. Commercial vehicles : Wastegate turbo is widely used in commercial vehicles.

Automotive turbocharger market by fuel type :

  1. Gasoline turbochargers market : The major gasoline turbochargers markets are in Asia-Pacific and North America have high preference for gasoline engines in passenger car segment.
  2.  Diesel turbochargers market : Diesel turbochargers find their prominent usage in passenger cars as well as commercial vehicles. European region is the largest market for diesel passenger cars  followed by Asian and North American market.
 Automotive turbocharger market by Geography:

  1. Europe is the highest consumer of turbochargers mainly due to the introduction of new standards such as Euro V and Euro VI which strongly emphasize on the reduction of CO2emissions.According to European Automobile Manufacturers Association, in 2011, the total turbocharged passenger cars produced in Europe accounted for 26% of the global production.
  2. Asia-Pacific is also another big market for turbochargers as there are big automobile manufacturing markets in China, Japan, and South Korea. In Asia-Pacific, China is the biggest market for turbochargers with a penetration rate of 18% in 2011 and a penetration rate of about 15% in passenger cars.
  3. North America is far behind Europe and Asia-pacific in the use of turbochargers in automotive.
  4. Rest Of World: In ROW, Brazil and Russia are two big markets of turbochargers in automotive. The penetration rate of turbochargers in Brazil was around 11% in 2011.

Applications:

Turbocharged engines apart from automotive application are also used in applications such as marine, stationary power plants, other stationary generator sets, and off-highway vehicles. The increasing usage of automotive turbocharger has made the automotive manufacturers to consider it as a stock unit along with the engine while manufacturing vehicles.

Automotive turbocharger market forecasts:

The global automotive turbochargers market volume is expected to reach 39.45 million units converting into total revenue of $12.63 billion by 2017. In the year 2012, Europe accounted for nearly half of automotive turbocharger market volume followed by Asia-Pacific and North America.Europe expected to remain largest turbocharger market for next five years.

Global Turbocharger Market Consumption Vs Revenue Share, 2012
